In homage to a now-retired David Letterman, here are my top 10 signs that your company may be struggling with business intelligence:
- Metadata and data governance in general are considered nice-to-haves
- People in your organization believe Business Intelligence is a fancy word for reporting like sanitation engineer is for garbage man
- Your company doesn’t have a Business Intelligence team
- Your company has many Business Intelligence teams
- Every project’s “lessons learned” includes “Engage BI Team earlier in the project” but no one ever does
- Your BI Manager knows what time everyone leaves for the day
- You started with the “What is Business Intelligence” section of the website
- Your “data marts” consist of multiple spreadsheets and Access Databases managed by people who haven’t been promoted since the Bill Clinton Presidency
- Your senior management read an article in InformationWeek about that guy who did that thing and, you know, big data and now you’ve been charged with “making it happen”
- I don’t work for your company
